NIGHT OF MAY 9-10, 1968
At 5:15 AM, the battalion field CP took two M79 rounds. According
to one
after-action report, C/3-39th (opcon to the 4-39th), "conducted
ambushes on
the main waterways leading into Saigon. At [12:40 AM], just
outside the
village of Xom Co Dien [almost eleven kilometers south of the Y-Bridge,
and
four kilometers northeast of Can Giuoc], one of the ambushes allowed
three
sampans to come into their kill zone before engaging them with M-79
rounds
and M-16 fire. Two of the sampans were destroyed and the other
damaged.
Additionally, 3 VC KIA was accounted for."
Another report describes the same night
with different times and
statistics: "During the night (0040H, 0225H, and 0245H), Co
C/3-39 Inf . . .
engaged a total of 7 sampans heading north toward Saigon.
The area of ambush
was swept at first light and 8 VC bodies were found along with enough
canned
goods and rice to feed 100 men approximately two days."
The brigade log indicates that C/3-39th sank
two sampans at 2:25 AM, and
three more at 2:54 AM. All the sampans were moving north,
and a body count
was reported of 8 VC. The ambushes also reported seeing fire
coming from
village toward VC outpost. The company's "tiger scout states
that there was
enough food stuffs [in one of the sampans] to feed 1 company of
VC for 2
days," notes the brigade log. "4-39 request some divers to
check out the
other sampans[;] they feel there might be more supplies at the bottom
of the
river."
